Matthew

How many gospels do we have—four, or one? Paul says in Galatians 1:6 there is only one gospel. What we do have are four accounts of the one gospel: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Matthew forms a logical link between the Old and New Testaments. He writes to Jews while the Old Testament is a History of the Jewish Race. His aim is to show Christ to be the Messiah whom the Jews expected. He shows how Jesus fulfills all of the Old Testament prophecies. He quotes from the Old Testament more than Mark and Luke combined. It is only logical that the prophetic books of the Old Testament be followed by a book showing the fulfilment in detail of this prophecy. Thus Matthew, a Jewish book, written by a Jew, for the Jews is in its proper place.

Mark

The Romans were a people of power and action. World empire and conquest was uppermost in their mind. If Mark was to appeal to this class of people, he would have to present the Gospel of Christ as something of action, power, and world conquest. This is the only approach that would capture the Roman mind. If this pattern was followed, he would read and be challenged by the gospel of Christ. And, after all, this is what Mark wanted; and this is what he did.

Luke

Luke was a brilliant historian and when he writes he uses excellent Greek. He was a Gentile physician, a research historian as well as a God-inspired writer. The other gospel writers were eyewitnesses of the life and ministry of Jesus. He was not. However, his contact with so many people, his searching and constant inquiry enabled him to write as if he were an eyewitness. His account of names, places, governments, rulers etc. are so accurately recorded that no one has been able to prove him wrong. Sir William Ramsey declared Luke to be the greatest of all historians.

About one half of all he writes is not recorded by the other writers. In his gospel he records the life and work of Jesus of the gospel ministry, while in Acts he records the continuing history of redemption to the world.

John

The Gospel of John is unique. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are so similar that they are called the “Synoptic Gospels.” John is so different that it stands alone. Even the most casual reader of the gospels cannot help but see this difference. In the synoptics the main ministry of Jesus is in Galilee. In John the main ministry as recorded is in Jerusalem and Judaea. John alone records the marriage at Cana, the conference with Nicodemus, the woman of Samaria, the raising of Lazarus from the dead, Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, the Holy Spirit as Comforter and Paraclete, and many other events that contribute to his stated purpose.

Acts

Without the Book of Acts the New Testament would be incomplete for two obvious reasons.

First: It serves to bridge the gap between the Gospels and the Epistles.

Second: If we had to leap from the Gospels to the Epistles without any knowledge of Acts we would know very little about the history of the early church. True, we could piece together some pertinent facts from the Epistles of Paul but even this would leave us woefully ignorant concerning the power, activities, outreach and development of the first century church.

Acts is a continuation of Luke’s Gospel. His gospel closes with these words— “Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry in Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high,” (Luke 24:49). Acts begins at this point— “Jesus commanded that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father,” (Acts 1:4). Thus Acts begins where the gospel ends.

Romans

Most of Paul’s letters were written to meet a particular crisis, or to help a church deal with a heresy or some problem. Most are written under great stress and difficult conditions. Many were written in haste for the problems were urgent. But Romans was more deliberate. Paul had time to think and time to organize his material. He had time to develop his theme and doctrines to the fullest. Therefore, Romans is a great doctrinal treatise.

He had just recently written the letter to the Galatians to deal with the problem of Law vs Grace. In this epistle he wrote briefly about justification by faith. This is the heart of the gospel, and he wants to develop this theme more fully. Justification by faith is the hub of all other doctrines. The Romans needed to be grounded in this doctrine, so Paul makes this the theme of his letter to them. In Romans we have in more elaborate detail what he barely mentions in Galatians. He is not writing to correct a heresy or to fight a controversy. Paul is writing to show why justification is needed—how it is provided—how it is applied—and what it will do. This is what we will be dealing with as we study this great doctrinal treatise on justification by Grace through Faith.
